Look at what is already there

Check the fridge, freezer and cupboards before making a shopping list. Plan around food that needs using first. A multibuy can be useful for something you regularly consume, but it is less helpful when storage is limited or the food is unlikely to be used in time. Build the list around meals rather than offers.

Compare like-for-like unit prices

Use a consistent unit, such as price per kilogram, litre or item, where the products are comparable. Check whether a displayed offer needs a loyalty account or a particular pack size. Packaging can change, so do the comparison again rather than relying on the previous week. Consider quality and suitability as well as the numerical price.

Count the extras

Delivery minimums, service charges and a journey to another shop can change the value of a saving. Do not add unnecessary groceries solely to unlock a discount. Check storage and use instructions before buying in bulk. Keeping a short list of the products you actually use makes it easier to recognise a useful offer without chasing every promotion.
