Find the missing link
Look at the clothes you wore over the last fortnight, not the outfits you saved online. A useful addition connects several pieces you already own. Note the occasions when getting dressed felt difficult: a wet commute, a warmer office or a casual dinner. Buy for those real situations before shopping for a hypothetical lifestyle.
Compare more than the label
Check the composition, lining, fastenings and care label. A garment that needs special cleaning carries a different ongoing cost from one you can wash at home. Try sitting, walking and reaching when assessing fit. If shopping online, compare the garment measurements with a similar piece that fits, rather than relying only on a size letter.
Make repeat wear the test
Divide the purchase price by a realistic estimate of wears, treating the answer as a planning tool rather than a promise. An inexpensive item can still be poor value if it never leaves the wardrobe. Leave the tags on until you have tried it with existing outfits, and check the return deadline before deciding.
